Birch Trees

Welcome to Birch Class

Here you will find information about our class and the learning that we will be doing this term. Our teacher is Miss Powell and our learning partner is Mrs Kenna. On a Thursday afternoon, Miss Hodge will be in Birch Class.

Key Information

  • PE is on a Tuesday. Please make sure your child wears their PE kit into school and earrings are removed.
  • Reading books and records must be in school every day. Books will be changed on Friday. Please ensure your child reads daily and sign their reading record with the date, who they have read to and how many minutes they have read for.
  • Homework will be set on a Friday and is to be completed by the following Friday. This will include spellings, times tables or reviewing something they have learnt in class.
  • Please ensure your child’s belongings are labelled clearly with their name and they have a drinks bottle in school.

Our Learning

Spring Term 1

  • Phonics: We are learning to become fluent readers and are reviewing  set 2 and 3 sounds.
  • Guided Reading: We are improving our comprehension skills and learning how to answer VIPERS questions.  Our books this term are Arthur and the Golden Rope and Flat Stanley.
  • English: We are focusing on Arthur and the Golden Rope. We will be using this text to write our own adventure stories. We will also be learning about instructions and writing our own on how to defeat a beast. Finally, we will be learning the poem ‘Dreaming the Unicorn’ by Tony Mitton.
  • Maths:   Year 2’s will be learning about position and turns, addition and subtraction in context, to recognise, find and name fractions and time. Year 3’s will be learning about angles, addition and subtraction in context, to add and subtract fractions and time.
  • Science: We will be learning about animals including humans.

Our Foundation subjects

  • History: We will be learning about The Great Plague and The Great Fire of London.
  • DT: We will be learning about mechanisms. We will learn about levers and linkages and make our own moving animals.
  • PE: Our focus this term is Dance.
  • Computing: We will be learning about spreadsheets and creating our own.
  • French: We will be learning numbers to 20.
  • PSHE: Our focus this term is ‘Dreams and Goals’.
  • RE: Our key question this term is, ‘Could Jesus heal people? Were these miracles or was there some other explanation?’
  • Music: We will be listening to and learning about a piece of music called ‘Zadok the Priest’- Handel.
